SABER Regional Meetings

SABER West

On January 14th and 15th, 2023, nearly 300 faculty, staff and students attended the 7th annual SABER West conference at the University of California, Irvine. This gathering of biology education researchers and instructors included 20% of attendees from two-year institutions, 40% of faculty and staff from 4-year institutions and 40% who were students and postdocs. Presenters shared novel educational research, campus initiatives, and classroom-level interventions in the form of 30 talks, 13 workshops and 90 posters. In addition, SABER West continues to offer professional development programming that provides training opportunities for attendees in research methodologies and evidence-based instructional practices. The weekend opened with an inspiring plenary presentation from Dr. Nancy Acevedo-Gill (Cal State University, San Bernardino, College of Education) focused on leveraging student strengths to broaden participation in STEM. The conference agenda continued with concurrent short talks, attendee-led workshops, and education research posters all centered on the meeting theme of “Supporting Equitable Transitions in STEM Education.” Despite rain throughout the weekend, the conference was full of lively conversations, constructive feedback, and plans for future collaborations. The organizing committee looks forward to welcoming everyone back to UC Irvine on January 13-14, 2024. Look for more information this spring!
