Biology through Art supported several outreach efforts over the past few months. PI Mike Maxwell organized a student art exhibition at the Bonita Museum (San Diego), which displayed artwork created in biology courses at National University, California State University Fullerton, Northeastern Illinois University and Patrick Henry High School. Biology through Art co-sponsored the first Art Pavilion at the annual San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering with National University and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. In addition to these activities, PI Maxwell gave a teaching workshop at a STEM conference at UC San Diego, and co-PIs Veronica Ardi-Pastores and Kristy Forsgren presented on biology/art integration at the Southern California American Society for Microbiology and SABER West conferences.

SABER is launching a new Special Interest Group (SIG) focusing on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools, like ChatGPT, in biology education. This SIG aims to explore how GenAI can enhance teaching and learning in biology by bringing together educators, researchers, and technologists to share insights and develop best practices.
Our Goals:
1. Build a Community: Create a network for sharing experiences and collaborating on the integration of GenAI in biology education.
2. Survey Insights: Conduct a survey among SABER members to understand the needs and perspectives on using GenAI in biology teaching, informing the creation of resources and workshops.
3. Strategic Framework: Outline a framework to guide the research and application of GenAI in biology education, addressing research priorities and challenges.
4. Resource Repository: Gather and maintain a collection of GenAI tools and educational materials tailored for biology education.
Why Join?
Joining this SIG gives members a chance to engage with the latest developments in GenAI and contribute to its application in biology education. It's an opportunity to share knowledge, influence resource development, and support the integration of GenAI into the field.
Get Involved:
All SABER members interested in GenAI and biology education are invited to join. Your perspectives and enthusiasm will help shape the effective use of GenAI in our field. No technical expertise is needed.
For more information, contact Keefe Reuther (kdreuther@ucsd.edu)
Meet Us at SABER 2024:
We'll be meeting at SABER 2024 (details to be announced) to discuss further and connect with members.
