    Hampton University is accepting applications for the Chair of Biology positions. Rank and compensation will be commensurate with the qualifications of the candidate. The Hampton University School of Science and Department of Biological Sciences invite nominations and applications for the Chair of Biology position beginning August 2022.

    Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading Historically Black College/University (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton, Virginia. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution of higher learning with approval by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

    The Department of Biological Sciences offers both baccalaureate and master’s degrees in biology. The principal objective of the program is to incorporate the instructional and research expertise of faculty to provide a scholarly atmosphere in which students are exposed to a variety of ways to define, analyze and solve biological research problems. The curriculum provides fundamental and advanced interdisciplinary academic and professional enrichment for students who aspire to pursue graduate studies and careers in molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, botany, ecology, biomedical sciences, health-related professions, as well as students interested in teaching biology at the secondary and post-secondary levels. Three curriculum tracks leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology are: Pre-Med, Cellular & Molecular Biology, and Integrative Biology (i.e., Organismal Biology). The department also offers Master of Science degrees in Biology, Biology Education and Medical Science.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    As Chair, the successful candidate will be expected to broaden participation throughout the department by members of underrepresented groups; demonstrate effective leadership in a diverse community of faculty, students and staff; and become an articulate and vigorous spokesperson for the department’s scientific and educational missions.

    Reporting to the Dean, the Chair's workload includes teaching, maintaining an active research agenda, participating in disciplinary and university service, and administration of all aspects of the department. Further enrich the existing research profile of the department, as well as a clear plan for a continued research program that can be sustained within the workload parameters of the Chair's position. 

    Engage with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development. Evidence of academic leadership experience and accomplishments that demonstrate the potential for effective communication, resource management and allocation, supervision of personnel, conflict resolution while fostering a positive work environment, and program development and assessment

    Qualifications

    The successful candidate will hold an earned doctorate degree (PhD, MD, or MD/PhD) in biological sciences or closely related; a distinguished record of research accomplishments; evidence of excellent teaching; a record of administrative, managerial, and/or service experience demonstrating readiness for the role of Chair; and a record of promoting diversity. 

    Candidates must possess a record of academic accomplishment commensurate with the rank of professor with tenure, exemplified by research that has been broadly validated and externally funded, and a minimum of 3 years full-time college/university teaching experience at the associate professor level.

    Demonstrate commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.
