    The Department of Biology Teaching and Learning in the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota seeks a postdoctoral research associate interested in conducting research on biology teaching and learning at the undergraduate level. 

    The post-doctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Dr. A. Kelly Lane to conduct an NSF funded research project related to undergraduate students’ conceptual understanding of certain genetics topics and how this understanding relates to their conceptions of race. More description of the grant award can be found here. In general, the postdoctoral researcher will aid in the development of a genetics assessment. Specifically, responsibilities will include, but are not limited to,

    • Developing genetics content questions, interview protocols, and survey questions

    • Conducting interviews of undergraduate students

    • Conducting qualitative analyses of interviews and quantitative analysis of survey data

    • Recruiting participants

    • Mentoring undergraduate researchers

    • Writing manuscripts

    In addition, the postdoctoral scholar will be encouraged to engage in various professional development activities such as attending journal clubs, participating in department meetings, completing workshops and other training in inclusive teaching.

    Applicants should have either a Ph.D. in biology, genetics or related sciences with some experience in science teaching or education research; or a bachelor’s or Master’s degree in these fields with a Ph.D. in science education, learning sciences, biology education research or equivalent areas.

    Preferred qualifications include,

    • Experience teaching or conducting research in the field of genetics

    • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative analysis of educational research data.

    • Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in education research

    • Experience applying pedagogical best practices and evidence-based teaching methods to science teaching

    • Ability to teach, mentor, and support students from diverse backgrounds

    • Ability to work collaboratively with people from different disciplines and diverse backgrounds

    • Expressed awareness of diversity, equity, inclusion issues through research, service, teaching or other efforts

    The position start date is negotiable with an ideal start date of May 1, 2022. One year of funding is available for the position with the possibility of second year renewal depending on performance and project needs. The base salary is $51,000 per year, and includes benefits as established by the University HR department. We strongly encourage diverse applicants to apply.
