2026 Pre-Conference Workshops

Wednesday, May 27, 2026

Pre-meeting workshops are opportunities for SABER attendees to learn how to leverage biology education research findings either in their research endeavors or in the classroom.

From Policy to Practice: Designing AI-Inclusive and AI-Resistant STEM Learning Experiences

Jeffrey Olimpo

As the applications of generative AI (GenAI) within postsecondary education continue to evolve, the need for promoting GenAI fluency among all university constituents is critical. This interactive workshop invites attendees to first reflect on their own perceived level of AI fluency as a means to guide their development of STEM course policies and activities that integrate AI-inclusive and/or -resistant perspectives. Attendees will be further supported in this effort through exploration of the Scaffolded Artificial Intelligence Literacy (SAIL) framework. Leveraging these resources and policies/activities, attendees will then evaluate outcomes associated with implementation of a GenAI faculty, staff, and graduate student/postdoc professional development opportunity at the facilitator’s institution. This will prompt attendees to consider how they might promote AI fluency on their campuses and to examine, more broadly, how they might apply what they have learned in their own academic and professional spheres.

Infusing Quantitative Reasoning Activities within Biology Lectures

Lauren Stoczynski

Quantitative reasoning is an important skill for all science students to learn and is a key component of Vision and Change. How can we incorporate more quantitative reasoning into our biology lectures? In this workshop we would be discussing what quantitative reasoning means in the discipline of biology. Data literacy in the form of data management, graph creation, and graph interpretation will be discussed in light of recent literature and teaching tools developed from a faculty mentoring network based on the graph construction competency model for biology. The main deliverable of this workshop would be the creation of a teaching tool that could be used within lecture using existing content. The goal of this workshop is to provide space for brainstorming and support so instructors feel more comfortable teaching quantitative reasoning and implementing small changes to their in-course activities to support student learning goals.
