Assistant Professor, Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) in the Biological Sciences

The University of Rhode Island seeks candidates for a tenure-track, academic-year appointment (50% research, 40% teaching, 10% service) at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Biological Sciences. The position is part of a hiring initiative to strengthen the scholarship of teaching and learning, with a special emphasis on student success and retention in STEM disciplines.

We seek Biology Education Research (BER) candidates interested in developing a strong and externally funded research program in undergraduate biology education. The successful candidate will conduct research, support and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and teach a course in introductory biology as well as upper-level or graduate courses related to their interests. The successful candidate will couple their research and teaching efforts to improve teaching and learning within their own classroom while possibly partnering with other STEM instructors. We are especially interested in candidates with research experience and/or interests relating to building equity and inclusion in STEM education, and candidates with a demonstrated commitment to addressing the systemic biases and significant challenges experienced by students historically excluded from science.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Biology Education, or a related field by June 2022. Successful candidates will have an excellent record of scholarship (peer-reviewed publications) and teaching, as well as a demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
