Position Summary

The Department of Biology at University of Detroit Mercy College of Engineering & Science invites candidates to apply for a full-time tenure track faculty position. As a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI), we offer small classes and close collegial relationships. The College’s faculty, form a vibrant community of teaching scholars with a strong focus on student-centered teaching, and professional and academic mentorship of students. We are particularly interested in candidates who would contribute to our efforts to provide support and opportunities for historically minoritized students to pursue research careers in biology and related areas. These efforts are currently being supported by a BUILD grant from the National Institutes of Health (https://eng-sci.udmercy.edu/research/rebuildetroit.php).

The Biology department at Detroit Mercy includes fourteen full-time faculty who engage in scientific research, mentorship, and student-advising for students within the College of Engineering and Science and the College of Health Professions. The department serves approximately 450 undergraduate Biology majors as well as Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Chemistry and Biochemistry majors. The Biology department also provides accelerated and early assurance programs in cooperation with the Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, the Detroit Mercy Physician Assistant graduate program, and Michigan State College of Human Medicine.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Teaching responsibilities will include teaching Comparative Anatomy, Evolution, a senior capstone writing-intensive course, and potentially upper-level courses based on area of expertise that complements or expands current offerings in the department.  

Requirements

 A successful candidate would be one that has a strong interest in implementing best practices in teaching pedagogy including evidence-based teaching and assessment strategies. We seek a collaborative educator who is an enthusiastic teacher-scholar committed to supporting the diverse population of undergraduate students, and who can enrich and contribute to the College’s multifaceted diversity.

Candidates should have a proposed research agenda geared toward a primarily undergraduate institution. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability and interest to pursue external funding and to disseminate results in refereed publications and conferences. Candidates need to articulate a vision for mentoring undergraduate students in the laboratory. While the specific area of research focus is broad, the ability to engage undergraduate students in research is essential.

Required Qualifications

• Candidates must hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in a basic science or biology specialty.
• Experience teaching in the college setting using active teaching strategies or equivalent
• Record of scholarship that demonstrates a contribution to the pursuit of external funding, disseminating results in refereed publications and conferences 

Preferred Qualifications

• Postdoctoral training (equivalent to)
• Knowledge of assessment strategies associated with course learning outcomes
• Knowledge of pedagogical best practices for a diverse undergraduate student body 
• Experience working with undergraduate students in the laboratory  
• Commitment to student-centered mentoring and advising
• Evidence indicating initiative in engaging in service to the department, college, university, and community in alignment with the mission of the university

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
