Description
University of Washington’s Department of Biology and Biology Education Research Group is searching for a postdoctoral research associate in biology education research. The successful candidate will work on an NSF-funded project that explores the course structures and instructor behaviors in large active learning STEM courses that inform the classroom appraisals of students with marginalized identities.
The goal of the project is to identify course features that contribute to building an inclusive (or exclusive) active learning classroom. This project has both a qualitative and quantitative component and is a collaboration between Drs. Elli Theobald and Scott Freeman at the University of Washington, and Dr. Sarah L. Eddy at Florida International University.
The successful candidate will lead the quantitative component of the study and work closely with Dr. Theobald. In addition, the successful applicant will be encouraged to develop projects based on their own interests as part of this position. The Theobald lab (https://sites.google.com/site/ellijtheobald/home) focuses on equity in higher education - how can we promote equity in educational outcomes, equity in student dynamics, and equity broadly in STEM majors. We are based at the University of Washington - a public research institution serving over 36,000 students located in Seattle, WA. UW offers opportunities to interact and collaborate with a dynamic group of science education and discipline-based education faculty across multiple STEM fields (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, etc.).
The appointment is full time 100 % FTE with a 12 month service period with possible renewal for one additional year contingent upon satisfactory performance. Both remote and part time work can be negotiated. Some travel may be required.
The salary range for this position will be $5459-$5500 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
Qualifications
The position requires a PhD or foreign equivalent in either (a) a STEM field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, etc.) with a demonstrated interest in education, (b) science education, (c) educational psychology or economics, or (d) other related fields. Candidates should have experience with quantitative methods. Examples of quantitative skills that candidates have, or are highly motivated to learn, include multilevel modeling, Bayesian modeling, predictive modeling, etc. These skills may be transferred from other disciplines (for example ecological forecasting), and candidates are encouraged to think broadly and creatively about how their skills may fit project needs.
The ideal start date is between September 1st, 2023 and January 1st, 2024 (there is some flexibility here).
