ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION

POSITION: The Biology Department at Colorado State University requests applications for a non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to revamp our undergraduate lab courses and enhance our training of graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). We seek a biologist or biology education specialist to lead curriculum development for lab courses, restructure GTA support and training, and oversee the lab program management. The position includes collaborating with other faculty to evaluate effectiveness of pedagogical initiatives and to secure internal and external funding for projects. Competitive candidates will demonstrate a commitment to inclusive pedagogy and the biological background needed to design lab activities and assessments for a broad range of courses.
This non-tenure track position has a renewable contract, and this new team member will be key in ongoing efforts to deliver an engaging curriculum that prepares students to excel in a broad set of life science careers. The expectation is that newly designed lab content will align with broader departmental goals of an inclusive welcoming environment for all students, and will focus instructional approaches towards promoting scientific competency, evidence-based reasoning, and reading and writing in the discipline.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will lead teaching and curriculum development (70% effort) in collaboration with other faculty and lab coordinators. This includes adapting program structure for effective pedagogy by GTAs and updating undergraduate lab learning objectives, activities, assessments, and course materials. Administration and program management roles (15%) will include supervising two lab coordinators, leading GTA assignment and hiring, managing online content for course management delivery, and implementing policies and procedures that foster undergraduate learning and GTA success. Research effort (10%) includes collaborating or leading research studies on curricular innovations, with contributions to preparing proposals, implementing studies, analyzing data, and disseminating results. Service (5%) on relevant committees on behalf of the department will depend on expertise of the candidate.

Required Job Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Biology, Biology Education, or related discipline
Broad knowledge of biological sciences
3 or more years teaching experience in undergraduate biology courses
Expertise in research methods and data analysis
Demonstrated excellent communication skills
Demonstrated commitment to inclusion and diversity
Preferred Job Qualifications:
Experience implementing project and personnel management approaches
Record of collaboration and effective team work
Training in inclusive pedagogy
Demonstrated record of education-related research
Experience developing inquiry-based or authentic learning activities
SALARY: $83,500-$85,500 for 12-month appointment.

UNIVERSITY AND LOCAL ENVIRONMENT: Colorado State University, which has a total enrollment of over 25,000 full-time students, is located in Fort Collins, 60 miles north of Denver. The community of about 340,000 is situated along the beautiful front range of the Rocky Mountains. Other major employers in the community are Hewlett-Packard, LSI Logic, Agilent Technologies, Advanced Energy, Kodak, Anheuser-Busch, and Poudre Valley Hospital. There are also many state and federal research agencies in Fort Collins that contribute to the intellectual environment of the university. These include the Colorado State Forest Service, the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife, the US Forest Service, the US Geological Survey, the National Wildlife Research Center, the USDA-Agricultural Research Service, the National Park Service and the BLM. The University of Colorado in Boulder, the University of Colorado Health Science Center and Denver University in Denver, and the University of Wyoming in Laramie, are all within a one-hour drive. In addition to the many and varied cultural activities sponsored by the University, the community offers a center for performing arts, a symphony orchestra, repertory theater, choral society, and dance company. The city operates an indoor Olympic-size pool and ice arenas, other indoor and outdoor pools, five public golf courses, and sponsors, through its Parks and Recreation Department, a cornucopia of leisure-time activities. Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest are within 30 miles of Fort Collins.
