Codon Learning is an EdTech startup producing courseware grounded in evidence-based teaching and learning practices with the goal of promoting greater metacognitive equity in higher education. We have support from an NSF Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II award to develop and test a student application that helps students practice self-regulated learning skills. Although all students benefit from learning how to learn, a pervasive opportunity gap exists between students who have already learned effective self-regulation skills and those who have not. The Codon Learning student application is designed to promote the critical skills of using learning objectives, practicing spaced learning, and using self-testing, which students need to succeed in college.

As a supplement to our NSF SBIR award, Codon is applying to be matched with an Innovative Postdoctoral Entrepreneurial Research Fellow (I-PERF). This postdoctoral fellow would join our small team for one year to study the impact of Codon courseware during the 2022/23 academic year. The postdoctoral fellow would analyze large sets of quantitative system usage data to assess various student outcomes. The postdoctoral fellow would be co-mentored by PhD researchers on staff at Codon Learning, Dr. Ashley Rowland and Dr. Alexa Clemmons, and Codon’s Chief Academic Officer and University of Colorado Boulder professor, Dr. Jenny Knight. Codon Learning is based in Golden, Colorado, but the team is primarily remote. The postdoctoral fellow would have the option to work 100% remotely, or to work at the Codon Learning office near the University of Colorado. The position starts no later than July 1, 2022.

I-PERF Fellows receive an annual base stipend of $78,000 per year, optional individual health and life insurance benefits, relocation assistance to the approved host company, a professional conference travel allowance, and scripted professional development training funded by the National Science Foundation.

If you are interested, we encourage you to apply to the I-PERF program before May 1, 2022. I-PERF applicants must be matched to a company by May 31, 2022.
