About the Job

The College of Biological Sciences (CBS) seeks a senior-level, tenured, faculty member to join the Department for Biology Teaching and Learning (BTL) as an Associate or Full Professor.  This individual will bring their extensive research and teaching skills to an interdisciplinary department focused on excellence in undergraduate biology education and biology education research.

Duties/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate for this senior-level position is expected to bring an outstanding, vibrant research program focused on an active area of biology education research to BTL.  The candidate will be expected to continue their scholarly contribution to the discipline, to contribute to the academic program of the unit, and to provide service to CBS and the University where appropriate.  The candidate will be appointed at the Associate or Full Professor rank, as determined by their prior rank and level of accomplishment. 

The candidate’s responsibilities will be similar to other research-active BTL faculty: approximately 50% research, 40% teaching, and 10% service.  Teaching duties will be based on the area of expertise of the candidate.

Required Qualifications:

-Ph.D. (or equivalent); appropriate areas include, but are not restricted to, biological sciences, learning sciences, science education and biology education research.

-Rank of associate professor, full professor, or equivalent at time of hire.

-Established record of excellence in:

• Biology education research, as measured by success in publishing peer-reviewed papers and obtaining external funding

• National leadership in biology education research/biology education

• Teaching biology utilizing a variety of evidence-based teaching methods in the classroom and a commitment to the success of undergraduates from different life experiences, cultures, and communities

• Working effectively with individuals of diverse life experiences, cultures, and communities, including individuals in different positions and career stages, such as faculty, academic/professional staff, graduate students, undergraduate students or post-doctoral fellows.

-Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse communities and cultures.

The Department of Biology Teaching and Learning:BTL is a unique department – no other institution has brought together a group of researchers and educators as a department with the explicit goal of fostering biology education research and teaching excellence.  To that end, BTL has become a nationally-recognized leader in designing and implementing innovative student-centered approaches to biology teaching, in both classroom and laboratory settings.  The Department currently includes eight tenured and tenure-track faculty, thirteen teaching faculty, eight education specialists and staff, twelve lab services members, and seven associated faculty.

Undergraduate Biology Education:  The Department manages all introductory biology courses within the College of Biological Sciences. These courses serve both non-science majors and CBS students in the seven majors available within the College. In this capacity, the BTL faculty and staff participate in both design and delivery of highly innovative, student-centered courses that are typically taught in the University’sActive Learning Classrooms.  The ten introductory Biology courses currently offered in CBS serve approximately 6,500 students annually.

BTL also houses the Nature of Life program and the CBS Instructional Labs group.  The Nature of Life program is a unique, comprehensive, integrated set of four courses for all CBS first- and second-year students.  The CBS instructional Labs support 25 courses that serve approximately 7,000 students yearly.  The group hires and trains teaching assistants, and supports instructional and logistical needs of the instructors in these courses. 

Scholarly Teaching and Biology Education Research:  The successful candidate will join a thriving and collaborative department. BTL members are active in educational research, including student learning, instructional strategies, and inclusive teaching and mentoring.
