Position Summary 

The Human Biology (HBIO) Program in the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University invites applications for 2 full-time, 9-month fixed-term faculty positions. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2023 and reappointment is expected based on satisfactory performance and continued funding. HBIO is a large undergraduate academic program serving a diverse population of students interested in health and biomedical science careers. The successful candidates will become part of a teaching team that is developing and implementing a new, innovative, 3-course core curriculum focused on biology, health, and community, with a specific goal of preparing HBIO students to deliver inclusive and equitable healthcare for a diverse population. We welcome applications from candidates with a variety of experiences and disciplinary backgrounds including biology, anthropology, public health, science education, and health sciences. Appointment at the instructor or assistant professor level will be based on degree and experience.  

The primary responsibilities of the successful candidates will be to collaborate with colleagues to develop, coordinate, and teach HBIO295: Human Biology and Society, a course in which students study the biology of a particular disease or condition and explore how the social determinants of health impact the incidence, treatment, and progression of the disease. While the general, student-centered course structure will be similar for all sections of the course, instructors will choose the specific disease or health condition that will be the focus of the sections they teach as well as the related readings and instructional activities.  

Minimum Requirements 

• A master’s degree  in biology, anthropology, public health, science education, health sciences, or related field. 
• Teaching potential as reflected in experiences communicating with and educating people or populations (e.g. instructor, science/health communication, working with people or populations to promote health). 

• Commitment to or experience with advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion by cultivating equitable and inclusive learning environments for a diverse group of learners. 
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues as part of a team. 
• Commitment to professional development.   

Desired Qualifications  

• A doctoral degree  in biology, anthropology, public health, science education, health sciences, or related field. 
• Knowledge of or experience with discipline-based education research, scholarship of teaching and learning, and/or scholarly approaches to curriculum development.  
• Experience teaching  in a relevant field as an instructor of record. 
• Professional experience developing and/or disseminating knowledge in a relevant field through research, outreach, publication, or presentations.
